Learn why Swiss universities are turning to blockchain to fight the growing problem of fake diplomas.
How can we be sure if a diploma is real or fake? Forged diplomas can be bought online with just a few clicks for a ridiculously low price. Searching “fake diplomas” via Google leads to over 24 million search results. The problem is much bigger than one may think. Dr. George Brown, in the context of a UNESCO study, estimated that worldwide, 30% of senior executives present qualifications they do not hold.
In order to tackle this problem, the Swiss blockchain specialist Certification has teamed up with SWITCH, which was founded by the major Swiss higher education institutions to foster new technology within the Swiss academic community. Together, Certification and SWITCH developed an easy-to-use SaaS solution, which enables universities to protect their diplomas from fraud by signing the document’s cryptographic fingerprint (hash) on +7’000 Ethereum blockchain nodes. As a consequence, anyone in possession of the diploma is empowered to verify its authenticity within seconds 7/24, instead of going through a complicated verification process, which can take up to two weeks. The solution takes European and Swiss data protection requirements such as GDPR and FADP into account as these requirements have top priority since day one. No diploma leaves the local environment of a university, neither for signing nor verifying, so that no sensitive information is uploaded to the cloud.
During this webinar we
- Present some facts and figures about fake diplomas
- Give a live demo how Swiss universities protect their diplomas on the blockchain
